1. We all know that Once Upon A Night Volume 1 hit number 1 on iTunes in the USA. It was a worldwide victory! What can you tell me about the second installment of OUAN so far ?
Ferry Corsten: I can tell you that it took a great deal to compile the second one! We had a lot of tracks sent to us after releasing the first volume, so we decided to release the following half a year later. We listened to hundreds of tracks and finally, 26 of them made the compilation.
2. How do you feel that the compilation either differs and/or compares to your previous effort ?
Ferry Corsten: CD1 is a bit more housey than on volume 1, and CD2 ends more trancey than volume 1. It takes the first installment into the extremes, I would like to say.
3. I notice that there is a pretty heavy guest roster (i.e. BT feat Rob Dickinson, Thomas Datt, Pulser, Daniel Wanrooy, Breakfast, etc.) on your new compilation. So tell me, what's so special about their tracks ?
Ferry Corsten: They all have the Once Upon A Night sound to them. Actually, this goes for all tracks on the compilation. One of the first tracks we signed was the track by Pulser, so this was a track to build around. Of course, you never know where it all ends, but it I think it's a great follow-up to the first one. I'm happy with the result!
4. For your North American tour, you have lined up 20 cities in a matter of five weeks, from the southern U.S. to the northern regions of Canada. In terms of health and safety, have you ever done this before ?
Ferry Corsten: I've done this before, and that was in 2006 called the Ferry Corsten L.E.F. Road To Voodoo Tour. I started the 27th of September and ended the 28th of October at Voodoo Music Festival [in New Orleans, Louisiana]. I will also end my tour at Voodoo Music Festival this year on the 31st of October.
5. Is there anything special for the New Orleans event in particular, this year ?
Ferry Corsten: Actually, I'll be doing at three-hour set at the Amsterdam Dance Event (A.D.E.) in the Netherlands a week before. I fly back especially for the Dutch release party of Once Upon A Night vol 2. There is no better place to do this than during A.D.E.!
6. In a few days, all of us will be facing the annual DJ Magazine "judges" counting the votes. What do you reckon is going to happen to Ferry Corsten ?
Ferry Corsten: I don't know, really! It would be nice to make it on this list. I've been on it for a number of years now. We'll see. Regardless of what happens, I do want to thank all of your visitors/readers who voted for me.
7. It is my understanding that while rocking the American stages, you are also working on new material. What can you reveal or divulge about it so far ?
Ferry Corsten: I can't say much about it. We've been looking into some collaborations but until I'm sure about the final tracklisting, I would rather not say anything. You will hear another side of me on the album than you ever have before...
8. As far as the production, who did you work with this time around, and how much input do you actually have when it comes to a special Ferry Corsten track ?
Ferry Corsten: I produce all of my own music, so I have all of the input on the tracks. Of course, I have a team who get to listen to the track while I am producing it. They give me some comments and then I can adjust the track a bit, or not if I don't agree.
9. From a musical perspective where do you draw your inspirations from ?
Ferry Corsten: Inspiration comes from anywhere! Sometimes it's a song I hear or a place I visit. But most of the time, I sit in my studio and something comes up. The difficult part is to finish it then.
10. I have always wondered how do keep yourself relevant in this day and age of EDM (electronic dance music) ? What's your secret recipe of being the one we all know ?
Ferry Corsten: I've never been afraid of experimenting with my own sound. That way, I can keep it fresh, also for myself. Of course, I listen to the music that's "hot" at the moment and from there, I draw my own plans. I keep reinventing myself, too.
11. Any words of wisdom for other aspiring producers ? And a final message you want to relay to the readers of TranceSound.net ?
Ferry Corsten: For the aspiring producers, I would say: Be original and don't go with the flow. Don't use all the same presets like everybody else does. Take your time and deliver quality. To all the readers of TranceSound.net, I would like to say: Thanks for your support, and I hope to see you soon at a gig!
