1. Steve, we last caught up with you around the time of the Night Music Volume 2 release. Can you fill us in on what’s been going on since then ?
The Thrillseekers: Well, it is been an eventful year with gigs literally taking me round the world, and then back again! There have been some incredible events ranging from small, intimate clubs, right through to playing to 20,000 all under 1 roof. There have been a few scrapes along the way, a few missed flights and, of course, many sleepless nights! Recently, I have been spending a lot more time in the studio writing tracks for my album. In terms of musical ideas, I have pretty much all I need. I now need to go to work on the production, which for me is the time consuming part.
2. What was the thought process regarding the selection of the tracks for discs 1 and 2 ?
The Thrillseekers: I called disc one "Fast Forward", as it is a mix of current and forward thinking music. It is really the very best of what I am playing in my sets right now. Disc 2 "Rewind" focuses on the biggest tracks from my sets over the past year.
3. In your opinion how do you feel that “Night Music Volume 1”, and “Night Music Volume 2” relate or differ from the third installment “Night Music Volume 3” ?
The Thrillseekers: Electronic music evolves at such a fast pace, so stylistically the "Volumes" sound quite different. At least they do to me! There is a theme running through them, though, as they showcase the tracks I would typically play in my sets, and I generally go for a certain sound.
4. Can you tell us about how you collaborated with Kathleen Fisher for the vocals on your new single on the album entitled “The Last Time” ?
The Thrillseekers: Sure. I contacted Ron Wasserman (one half of Fisher) about possibly working together, and he was really up for doing something. That very night I wrote 80% of the music for what was to become "The Last Time". Musically, it all came together very quickly. I sent the track to Ron, and he went to work writing the vocal melody. We passed ideas back and forth for a few days before handing the track over to Kathy, who then wrote the lyrics. Kathy and Ron have a studio in Los Angeles, so spent a day recording the vocals before sending them across to me. All the parts were recorded in 2 or 3 takes, that girl can really sing. I then went to work on the vocal production, combing together the best takes and adding effects.
5. Is “The Last Time” due to be remixed by any other artists ? If so, would it be possible for you to tell us who ?
The Thrillseekers: It certainly would! There will be mixes from Duderstadt, Breakfast vs Mike Saint Jules, Hydroid, Yankle vs Maor Levi, and Simon Bostock. I am really happy with the how they are all turning out.
6. What are you personal favorites on the album ? The Thrillseekers: Oh, that's a tough one, as they are all favorites, really. But if I had to choose just one, then I would
probably go with "Tiesto Presents Allure feat Julie Thompson 'Somewhere Inside' (Andy Duguid Remix)". I go all gooey when I hear Julie’s voice!
7. What cities are you most excited to travel to on the “Night Music Volume 3 Tour” ?
The Thrillseekers: Right now I am on my way to Guatemala City, and I am pretty excited! Also can’t wait to go back to Los Angeles and San Francisco as I always have such a great time there.
8. Would you say that you are working more on production, or DJing as of lately ?
The Thrillseekers: I typically spend 3 days each week away from home traveling around DJing. The rest of my time is split between the studio and my family. I don’t gig every weekend, so some weeks I will get to spend more time in the studio. My current focus is working on my album, so I am being very selective about the gigs I play.
9. Is there any new technology or gear that you are looking into or interested in purchasing recently as an upgrade for some of your equipment ?
The Thrillseekers: I have just bought a new DAW (Digital Audio Workstation), which is actually just a fancy name for a PC that’s got some cool things for music. Not to put too finer point on things, it is ridiculously powerful, which means I no longer have to worry about how many plug-ins or synths I am running, as this system can handle anything I throw at it, and then some. I am always buying new plug-ins (I love new toys!) and have also just bought some synths for the studio, a Virus TI and a Moog Little Phatty.
10. How do you feel in regards to many current releases going digital ?
The Thrillseekers: It is been on the cards for years, so I am not surprised really. I have taken the decision not to release vinyl on my label, as it is no longer financially viable.
11. At any point, would you be interested in selling The Thrillseekers theme clothing, and accessories on your website ?
The Thrillseekers: Ha, that is a bit of a random one! Haven’t got any plans just yet, but who knows in the future!
