Interview with Sasja Borjesen ( 15.04.2008 - 18:10 GMT UTC )
1. Hi there Sasja, how are You now and how is the 2008 treating you so far ?
Sasja Borjesen: Hi :) 2008 have been a bumpy ride so far. Music wise it is been a bit slow, but starting to pick up pace now - I have been sent some really good tracks to write for - and I really appreciate the producers that have considered me to work with them on their music. On a more personal level I have had some issues with work - but they are luckily solved and I am looking forward to the rest of the year :)
2. What can You tell us about Your career, how do You see it ?
Sasja Borjesen: Hehe - what career :) I am probably a little too stubborn - if I weren't, I might have been able to live off my music. Not that I am one to complain - I am quite happy the way things have turned out so far - I have met some wonderful people over the years, been to various places to perform and record, so all in all - I am pretty satisfied about it :)
3. What are the artists that has the most influence in Your singing carrier ?
Sasja Borjesen: My dad was probably the first encounter I had with music - he has been a singer/musician for many years. He was also the one that taught me to listen to Peter Cetera/Chicago, Toto, Level 42 and Atlantic Starr. In my teens I have to say the biggest inspiration was the one and only - Madonna :)
4. I see your discography since 2004 but when did You ever started to become a professional female vocalist ?
Sasja Borjesen: Well, my first rumble with the recording industry was when I was 19, lord what a crappy band *lol* - I was way too stubborn for them and their crappy contract, so we never actually got to record anything. Soon after I hooked up with 2 DJ/producer friends for the dance project "Davinah" - we had some success on the Danish Dance Chart with the singles "Sunshine After The Rain" (a cover of the Berri song) and "Innocent Child" (which was later re-released as The Untamed, with a new mix from Ayla - whom I then started to work with). So in short, when I was 19/20 years old :)
5. What do You think that a good vocalist must have to get into the top ?
Sasja Borjesen: Personally I think a vocal with a little edge is to prefer. I think it is important that you actually CAN sing, which is being showcased on many talent shows that people don't always know that they CAN NOT :)
6. How can You describe yourself as a lyric writer for this genre ?
Sasja Borjesen: I am a VERY dramatic lyric writer. I have had a few people asking if things were not going so well between Michael and I, when I wrote "I Feel Free", that was basically a song written about a previous relationship and "Secrets Broke My Heart" is about a friend and the troubles in his life. I often find it easier to write about sad/dramatic subjects and I have a very good imagination, which is being used a lot when I write.
7. Do You work alone when You write, or have You had collaborations with someone else ?
Sasja Borjesen: I have actually only co-written with my father (we have done some songs for commercials). When it comes to trance/house/chill, it just seems I am better cut out for writing by myself.
8. You did an amazing tune along with Falkon & Nebula. Do You have any new other projects along with them or you are focusing to work along with Michael ?
Sasja Borjesen: Thanks a lot :) So far I have done 1 other song with Nebula and I am gonna do more. He has a new interesting chill out style I really like and we have come up with some cool tunes, at least I think so :) I am of course also working with Michael, mainly as he is "managing" me and my time, but I will also write lyrics for an upcoming Michael Splint single. As mentioned earlier, I am also working with other great producers from around the globe.
9. Of all female vocalists out there, please tell me who is your role model, who is the one that you thing she has it all ?
Sasja Borjesen: Madonna, without a doubt.
10. Who is your front runner for the 2008 best female vocalist out there and why ?
Sasja Borjesen: Hmm... One of my all time faves are Sarah McLachlan, not just for her "Silence" tune, but her albums in general are really good. I am more an "album" person - and not many trance vocalists do albums... I am also into stuff like Lily Allen, Duffy and Corinne Bailey Rae.
11. We are aware that You are married to Michael Splint. Do You plan on having children at some point ?
Sasja Borjesen: As most women I am of course eager to become a mother, we are working on it :)
12. Can You share with us the way Michael helps and supports You in this field ?
Sasja Borjesen: Hihihihihi, if you mean about the children thing, I don't think it would be suitable to let you know how he helps out in that process ;) other than that, he is a really good man and he does a lot of house work (typing this under gunpoint...) nah, seriously, he IS a good man and I love him, he is always there for me.
13. Must be amazing to live and share with someone the same passion and ideals, not many persons are so lucky in this life, is it like a continuous dream for You or You got used to this ?
Sasja Borjesen: It IS amazing! We met at the trance club were Michael was resident, I was already doing music, I have always loved music, so it was pretty great to meet someone you click with on so many levels (also other than music)
14. Do You travel with Michael often when he is on the road performing at events ?
Sasja Borjesen: Whenever I can, yes. We have also had the pleasure of performing together a few times, me singing, while he is DJing.
15. What made you decide to discontinue your official website and rely only on Your myspace page ?
Sasja Borjesen: Hehe, I think that was Michael's decision, he is doing all that stuff. I was way too bad at updating and with so many people using myspace, we thought it would be the rational thing to do. It is much easier to update for me and I have more fun with this than a "regular" website.
16. What are Your expectations for Your career in the future ?
Sasja Borjesen: To record and release more songs. Get out and perform some more, I have some ideas for a chill/lounge project and I think that might be the way for me to go, as I really love jazzy stuff, which is hard to combine with Trance :)
17. Beside music do You have any other hobbies ? If it was not for You to be into music what else do You think were to fit for You ?
Sasja Borjesen: Beside music... I also paint. I am hoping to have some of my paintings up for sale on my myspace sometime during summer. I read books and watch loads of girlie tv shows :) If I was not into music... I have no idea, that would be horrible I think!
18. Sasja, we appreciate You for accepting the interview for TranceSound.net go a throw a final message for the fans and how they can reach You ?
Sasja Borjesen: Hmm, I would say thanks for having me, I am really happy for this opportunity and I am still really humbled by the fact that I have fans. It is so anyone can message me on my MySpace :) Sasja
