Interview with Sander van Doorn ( 23.05.2008 - 15:00 GMT UTC )
1. What types of music were you exposed to growing up ?
Sander van Doorn: Like most young kids I was into the 80’s 90’s wave, so that would include bands like Depeche mode, The Cure, A-Ha and a complete catalogue of Turn Up The Bass compilations.
2. Who taught you the basic skills of DJing and production ?
Sander van Doorn: I actually taught myself by messing about with different programs, computers and so on. When it turned out I was relatively good at it, I got bigger stuff and learned some more.
3. Are you planning to continue working under some of your older aliases such as Sandler, Sam Sharp, and Purple Haze ?
Sander van Doorn: I always get asked this, and the answer is no… or at least for now. Everything I have done for about 18 months now has been as Sander van Doorn. I produce many different styles that were associated with the above aliases, therefore I don’t believe anyone is missing out.
4. How does it feel to be headlining alongside many of the other top EDM Djs ?
Sander van Doorn: It took a bit of getting used to and it’s fantastic. Contrary to belief, we all get along just fine.
5. What are some of your favorite tracks at the moment ? Arnej – They always come back
Jean Claude Ades & Vincent Thomas – Shingaling
Mac Zimms – Stomp
6. Would you ever play a track that you didn't’t necessarily like due to the fact that you knew the crowd would enjoy it ?
Sander van Doorn: No, absolutely not although sometimes I will play a track (for instance one of my older tracks that I have now heard about a million times) that I didn't’t originally feel like playing in a set because people request it.
7. What does your upcoming schedule look like, and where will you be traveling ?
Sander van Doorn: Pretty busy. I have got a healthy Ibiza schedule planed out, I am going to China for the Olympics, doing festivals like Dance Valley, Global Gathering, Creamfields and I have got a tour coming up throughout Australia. I will also be back and forth to America as well this year.
8. You recently returned to New York City for the second time. How does your experience last time differ from your most recent visit ?
Sander van Doorn: I have actually played 3 times in New York to date, and each time gets better. I have to say that the date you refer to was just out of this world.
9. This year you are scheduled to perform at Global Gathering. Are you excited ?
Sander van Doorn: Can’t wait to be honest, closing the Godskitchen arena last year was one of the best Dj experiences I have had in my career so far.
10. Do you prefer performing at large outdoor massive or clubs ?
Sander van Doorn: In all honesty – both! With a club you get the intimacy and with huge outdoor events you get the rush!
11. Do you have any enjoyable experiences that you would like to share with us in regards to events where you have recently performed ?
Sander van Doorn: Yeah actually I just finished a US tour and on one of only a few days off my manager and I went Sky Diving. It was my first time and it won’t be my last! It was incredible!
12. How do you feel about fan made merchandise such as posters, t-shirts, and other items that are not officially licensed ?
Sander van Doorn: If you’re talking about fans making their own Sander van Doorn shirts then I think it’s one of the biggest compliments you can get as an artist. I have only just started up my own online shop as well so if people don’t want to make their own, there is official stuff at my website (was that cheeky or what?).
13. When did you first meet Dj Tiësto ?
Sander van Doorn: That would be 2 years ago at the Winter Music Conference.
14. How do you feel about your fellow Dutch DJ/Producers Armin van Buuren, Ferry Corsten, and Tiësto ?
Sander van Doorn: They are all really kind and down to earth and of course I’m not complaining about their support. There is a notion that we don’t get on, but come on… we all see each other weekend in, weekend out, we all get along fine. Put it this way, it’s usually my left ear that burns, not my right! ;-)
15. What is your opinion on the genre’s currently on the rise such as Minimal and Electro where the melody would not necessarily be the main part of the track ?
Sander van Doorn: Well I embrace pretty much every new style that’s being developed because it can make a set a lot more interesting and also creates a lot of inspiration amongst producers. When it comes to minimal the “Less is more” principal can make for really cool and driven sounding tracks, but also can become a bit flat sometimes.
16. What are some of your dislikes in modern EDM music ?
Sander van Doorn: I would say there was way too much material being released with very little of it being amazing. Way too many people produce with the idea of finishing a track, rather than making it as tight as possible. Saying that though, there is some really good stuff coming through from a few people.
17. How do you relax and unwind ?
Sander van Doorn: By kicking back, doing absolutely nothing other than watch a movie.
18. Can you tell us anything about your home life, and family ?
Sander van Doorn: I have got a brother and a sister, 4 nephews, 1 niece, Mum & Dad, plus a girlfriend whom I live with.
19. Thank you for sharing a bit of your world with us. In closing, do you have any other comments on topics which were not covered, or anything else to say to your fans ?
Sander van Doorn: Hope to catch you very soon! Cheers.
