Interview with Quivver ( 09.07.2008 - 21:10 GMT UTC )
1. We know already that You consider that the EDM scene is too divided nowadays and You try in a way or another to block this with your production, but is there a main reason of being against it ? Please share with us further details about it, thanks indeed.
Quivver: There is so much good music around these days in many different genre's and I think people are too easily led by what the media tells them is the latest new sound and end up missing out on a lot of great music. Of course it is good that music is changing and progressing but as soon as a certain sound gets popular it seems like everyone jumps on the bandwagon you get thousands of tunes that all sound exactly the same.
2. As an artist John, tell me what is Your goal with music ? Where You want to end up like ?
Quivver: I have been working on a song based electronic/rock album for a while so my next goal is to get that finished. Apart from that I want to do more stuff for films, tv and video games, that's one of the reasons I moved to Los Angeles.
3. I have been told that You are about to release a new album called 'Dirty Nails and Vapor Trails' on 29 June, are there any more details that You would love to share with us ?
Quivver: It is actually gonna be out in July now. I am really happy with the way it turned out and so far it's had some great reactions from the handful of dj's I sent tracks to.
4. Several people are saying that Your new album will be a genre buster and something to shout about, therefore, does the title of the album have something in common with it ?
Quivver: Yeah, there is a contrast of different styles on the album, there is some dirty, dark moments and there is some uplifting, chilled moments and I wanted the title to relate to that, the mixture of darkness and light.
5. As about me and other people worldwide, 'Chasin a feelin' is the hottest track at the moment, Sasha played it on (Winter Music Conference) WMC tours, along John Digweed and it was played by Pete Tong on the British well known radio station, BBC Radio 1 too and not only, how do You feel about it, since You got a lot of support from Djs around the world ?
Quivver: Yeah, I gave "Chasin a Feeling" to Sasha just before Miami WMC and he flipped when he heard it. He is always played my music but I have honestly never seen him so excited about one of my tracks. I never really expected him to play it out since it is a 165 BPM drum n bass track but he is been finishing his sets with it since WMC, and now Pete Tong's played it a couple of times on the "Essential Selection" so it looks like it could be a big tune. It was always one of my favorite tracks from the album so it is cool that it is getting such great feedback and support.
6. You have changed Your style with 'Chasin a feelin' a bit. How did that happen and how does that help You in the EDM industry ?
Quivver: Making an album meant I could experiment a bit and go in different directions. When I first started producing in the early nineties I made drum n bass (or jungle as it was called then) under the name 'Skanna' and I have been wanting to do another drum n bass track for a while, it is cool that it became the track from the album that is creating the most hype.
7. You recently moved from Your native country, which is UK, to US thou, where the album will be 'born', does this represent in a way or another, a reborn of Your carrier in the United States ?
Quivver: I have definitely been a lot more focused on work since I moved to Los Angeles which is what I intended, in England I was going out and partying too much and not getting enough work done, I needed a change of scenery and the change has made a big difference.
8. To switch things up a bit, let's talk about role-models in the EDM industry. I am pretty sure that are lot of young Djs, producers and remixer worldwide that look up to You, wanting to be like You one day, because You are doing your thing right now, but what advice would You give them that the EDM industry stands for ?
Quivver: I think the main thing is you have to be passionate about music and determined to succeed. If you have an ear for music and you work hard enough you will get there in the end.
9. As John Graham aka Quivver gets better does he look forward to winning a Grammy award one day in the future ?
Quivver: Haha ! That would be nice but I am not gonna hold my breath. I am gonna continue to make the best music I can for as long as possible so we will see where it all goes...
10. I wish You the best of luck in Your producer and remixer career and hope one day I will be able to attend any future gigs of Yours, specially in London, but before we take this exclusive interview to an end, please tell me where fans can check out more from You ?
Quivver: Thanks a lot! Fans can check out more about me on www.myspace.com/quivver
