Interview with Arksun    ( 12.03.2008 - 22:40 GMT UTC )

    1. You being a producer, I reckon You can share for the producers and the beatmakers out there what are the most important 3 things they need when they create a good track ?

Arksun: Hmmm 3 important things for creating a track, lets see:

    i) Produce honestly. This is the most important as far as I'm concerned. Don't just sit down at the computer and think "hmm, what can I make today thats catchy or cool", produce from the heart, make it something you really feel, or a story of personal experience, as these will touch people the most.

ii) Don't worry about how it compares to over peoples work. By all means use other tracks as a technical reference for balance/eq etc. But musically just do your own thing, whether it be similar to another artist or completely different, doesn't matter, just don't think about it, do your thing.

iii) Make the best of the tools you have. It's better to have just 1 synth that you know extremely well, than drown yourself in lots of different synths, but barely scratch the surface of any.

    2. What was in Your mind when You made this wonderfull track called 'Desire' ?

Arksun: Desire was in my mind when I made desire, but not in a raw sexual kind of way, more a general feeling of desire. Whatever you desire.

    3. You started out as a producer Yourself, how did You made things happen and break into the EDM industry ?

Arksun: No-one will make things happen for you, you have to do it yourself. Sure a bit of luck, being in the right place, bumping into right people can help. But that happens because you put the hard work in so such situations come about. In my case it was the same for a lot of producers, just sending tracks out and hoping a label or DJ will like it.

    4. Tell me what are some of the biggest things You have learned Yourself in 2007 as a producer that Your going to take with You in 2008 and build upon ?

Arksun: 007 was actually a bad year for me both professionally and personally. After the huge success of Arisen back in 2006, I felt both a public expectation to match it in a followup as well as some personal need to match or better it. The result being that I finished nothing. On top of that I had serious health problems that I'm still having to deal with, a death in the family and my father ending up in hospital too. So in 2008 I realise now more than before how precious time can be and that I should use it more wisely and not worry about expectations, just let go and do my thing, regardless of whether its better or worse than Arisen.

    5. Please tell me if there are any other new tracks You're working on and if there is anyone You are working at the moment along with.

Arksun: Recently I've been focusing on my sound design work, making a commercial soundbank for the Sylenth1. Music wise I've almost finished another short ambient piece which will go up on myspace and then maybe, just maybe, a little more trance might come along

    6. Having music influences from the French guy, Jean Michelle Jarre and the well known, Hans Zimmer, have You ever think of following their footsteps and produce music for movies, as in soundtracks ?

Arksun: That would be a dream come true. Film scores have been a massive influence on me and would love to one day score music for film. I don't feel my skill is good enough for doing this at the moment though, but hopefully one day I will be good enough.

    7. Some of Your fans they compare You to Mark Otten, what do You have to say about that ?

Arksun: You are the first person to tell me that, I'd never heard that before! lol. I don't know what to say really, other than I like Mark's music, met him a couple times and he's a really great bloke. Does my music sound like his?, not really, we each do our own thing.

    8. For a producers that are trying to create their own style what would be some key ideas that they should keep in the forefront of their mind ?

Arksun: Well I would say that its better to just do your own thing than deliberately forcing yourself to be different for different sake, because then you are not being true to yourself. One thing I would say is, let other peoples music sub-conciously influence you rather than conciously. That is to say, listen to a lot of different music of different styles, let it wash over you, but when it comes to producing time, don't think about what you've heard, just 'do'.

    9. How many projects You have been into so far and if You are thinking to create some other ones into the future ?

Arksun: By projects you mean different artist names, collaborations etc yes?. Well, so yar I've been known as Arksun, Hidden Logic and one half of Luminary. I don't really have any plans on creating new artist names or new partnerships at this time.

    10. Please tell me about Your musical background and despite keyboards, what else do You play ?

Arksun: I only play the keyboard and wouldn't consider my playing skills to be all that good. I was given piano listens as a child but got bored of them quickly, so never really learnt properly, more self taught. I used to love hearing a theme tune on the TV, then trying to work out how to play it on the piano.

    11. Do You have a message to all TranceSound.net members or anyone reading this exclusive interview ?

Arksun: Thank you for this interview. I guess my message would be, to stay positive, appreciate the things in life you enjoy, rather than spend your time thinking about the things you don't like. That whilst I want to explore my ambient side of music right now, I will make another trance track, hopefully this year and that I'm very thankful for the love and support I've had so far following my dream.
