| Interview with Super8 & Tab ( 24.04.2007 - 19:40 GMT UTC )
1. (To Super8) You also worked with Paavo Olavi Siljamäki for your 'Aalto' project. How was it to work with him ?
Super8: It’s always lots of fun as we are friends out side of studio as well. For us it’s same as for some people going to a pub. We take a couple of beers with us and have fun while doing music.
2. (To Super8) Will there be any new 'Aalto' release in 2007 ?
Super8: I doubt there will be Aalto release in 2007, but never say never Paavo is really busy and so are we with Tab so it seems that there is no time for Aalto this year.
3. What are your all time top 10 tracks of any genre ?
Super8 & Tab: Not in order: Coldplay – Fix You, QT Quartet – Hold That Sucker Down, Chicane – Saltwater, Energy 52 – Café Del Mar, Oceanlab – Satellite, Prodigy – Out Of Space, Moby - Go, William Orbit – Barbers Adagio (Ferry Corsten Remix), Nirvana – Come As You Are, Massive Attack – Tear Drop. But there are so many great tracks to choose from so it’s really hard to pick only ten. Here are some we are playing at the moment: Junk Science – My name is Jacque , Duderstadt - Smile feat. Anita Kelsey (Duende Dub Mix), Remo-Con – Cold Front (Bart Claessen remix), Super8 & Tab – Suru, Marc Marberg - Megashira
4. When can we expect 'Needs to Feel' to be released ?
Super8 & Tab: It should be out now - So check your local record store !
5. Tell us something about the new radio show 'Anjunabeats Worldwide' and also the compilation of the same name.
Super8 & Tab: Actually the Worldwide Vol.1 compilation was so successful that its been nominated in this years Miami Winter Music Awards. It seems like Armin got it this year but maybe next time it’s our turn – but it was really good to be nominated! Our two-hour show is every once a month where we play tracks from side to side. Main focus is on trance and progressive trance, but we might play out some progressive house and electro tracks as well. And yes, we do speak on there also so if you want to hear some Finnish accents please turn on to Anjunabeats Worldwide. You can listen it every week on DI.FM, XM Satellite, RMI.FM and Dubai 92FM. find out more about the Anjunabeats Worldwide from anjunabeats.com
6. (To DJ Tab) Can we expect any new releases under your 'AR52' and 'Fluid in Motion' projects ?
Tab: There are no plans for new releases under AR52 or Fluid in Motion but you never know! Our main focus is now on the Super8 & Tab project.
7. What are the earliest memories of trance music you have? What age were you at the time ?
Super8 & Tab: That is a hard question, as we really didn’t know that it was called trance at that time. But we have been into to it for looong time!
8. I’m sure you have regular contact with trance fans, but how do you usually get in touch with them ?
Super8 & Tab: We talk with people at gigs and thru emails, and MSN but Myspace is getting bigger all the time, it’s huge.
9. What can fans expect when they pick up your one of the latest single "Won't Sleep Tonight" ?
Super8 & Tab: If you have heard Helsinki Scorchin’ you have already good idea what to expect. We basically wanted to dark track with uplifting feel in it, but we didn’t want to take it too far from Helsinki Scorchin´. You can say its driving progressive-techy-trance track and we have Ben Lost’s on vocals.
10. For any kids that want to follow their dreams, whether it is in trance, remixing, singing, djing, or anything else what advice would you give them ?
Super8 & Tab: Do your own thing – don’t try to follow others. All the people are individuals and everyone has their own strengths. Find yours and use it!
11. What is the most rewarding aspect of producing, djing, mixing, remixing ?
Super8 & Tab: The moments when you notice you have learned something new or done something, and you just wonder, “ Is this really made by me?”
12. What is the name of the lead Synth you used in the production of "Won't sleep tonight" ?
Super8 & Tab: JP8080 plus Absynth2
13. What was the crowds reaction the first time you ever dropped Helsinki Scorchin in a club and what did they're reaction make you feel ?
Super8 & Tab: It was in Helsinki and at Hallmark. It was very exciting to see how the people went mad!
14. Were you at all surprised by the multitude of positive reviews your debut tracks "Won't Sleep Tonight" and "Helsinki Scorchin" received ?
Super8 & Tab: First Aid is our first track together and can be called as Super8 & Tab debut single. Back to your question; with these two tracks we had a goal to do something different from other tracks out there at that time. We thought they where both good tracks, but we weren’t waiting for such a success they achieved.
15. Who wrote the lyrics to "Won't sleep tonight" ?
Super8 & Tab: It was Ben Lost. We have known Ben already for years and he had gig in Finland so we invited him to our studio and he did these great vocals.
16. Which tracks always get an energetic response from the crowd ?
Super8 & Tab: Best part is that it depends where we are playing but those top 5 tracks we said earlier are making great reactions!
17. How hard was it to acquire the ability to spin to a certain type of crowd and what key things help you lead the flow of your set ?
Super8 & Tab: You need to know your tracks inside out. Then it is much easier to respond to the crowd’s reactions and lead them to direction you want them to go.
18. How many BPM's is the optimal track speed for your productions ?
Super8 & Tab: It’s from 134 to138.
19. What does your set up consist of ?
Super8 & Tab: Our studio is located in Helsinki and surprisingly it is called ‘HelsinkiVibe Studios’. Our set is built around G5 and Logic 7.2. We are using lots of Virtual Instruments like all Spectrasonics, and Arturia synths. Outboard gear we don’t use that much anymore, but we have a couple of Jp8080´s and Triton for example. Our gem is though our recently bought Soundcraft DC2020 analog mixing desk, which needs to go thru service before we can use it. As converters we trust on RME, but would love to change to Apogee someday.
20. Can you give us any tips on EQ and mastering of trance tracks ?
Super8 & Tab: Mastering we leave to professionals, but when it comes to EQing we can give one good piece of advice, Don’t over do it. Usually if you need to do lots of EQing, it means your original sound is not good enough. Work with that and don’t try to save it with EQ.
21. What is your favorite EDM related event or massive ?
Super8 & Tab: Love Parade in Berlin. The biggest Dance music event in the World. We played there last summer for over one million people!!!!!!
22. Do you prefer outdoor or indoor parties and why ?
Super8 & Tab: It’s no matter where you play whenever the party is good – that is most important thing!
23. How did you guys meet each other and when did you decide to team up ?
Super8 & Tab: We worked at same studio building in Helsinki and we decided to give it a try and see what happens if we try to produce a track together – and ‘First Aid’ was born. During that process we noticed our ways of working fit well together so we expanded our partnership to DJ’ing as well.
24. How would you describe the style and substance of your music and what you’re bringing to the trance scene as a duo ?
Super8 & Tab: We are trying to bring new ideas and sounds to trance. We take influences from progressive house and electro and we other than club music as well.
25. Do you believe that producers who work together as a duo have to posses some type of musical chemistry in order to create a lasting partnership in the industry ?
Super8 & Tab: When it comes to us I think that most important chemistry is our personal chemistry. We are spending so much time in studio, gigs so it’s really crucial to get along. After that comes musical chemistry which is really the driving force for us to do music together.
26. In your mind, were expecting to make an impact so quickly as a duo ?
Super8 & Tab: We didn’t have any expectations.
27. What happens when your co-producer or partner has a disagreement with you on the direction that a certain track is taking? How do you work on resolving that ?
Super8 & Tab: We don’t have that much disagreement in studio. If there is any, it’s usually something small which is quite easy to fix. Normal scene from situation of disagreement could go like this. Super8: “Tab, I don’t like this and this blaa blaa, and Tab answers:“ Well you do it then!” Hahaha
28. Where do you see yourselves in five years time ?
Super8 & Tab: Sitting in studio with even greyer hair. May be some hearing loss as well.
