Interview with Steve May    ( 03.08.2007 - 19:40 GMT UTC )

    1. Do You make beats for other artists besides Yourself ?

Steve May: No. I do a little bot of work with other artists though. Luke Chable and myself have started a project on the side with a big room progressive aim. Its always great fun working with Luke.

    2. Tell me more about 'Flavours Of The Month’ from Tickled Pink’s party on 25th of May that took place in Melbourne.

Steve May: The girls at tickled pink usually put on a "flavor" each month. Basically they get one of their favourite local or international Djs to come and play. I played with them back in February, and they invited me back to play the VS with their favourite flavors session. Its an awesome party, and lots of fun. It gives me more of an opportunity to play some of the more electro/prog sounds I have in my cd wallet

    3. Please tell me about the hook-up with Armada, try to share a few thoughts with us aswell.

Steve May: Well I have had the one release with Markus Schulz's Cold Harbour label. It has been a while since I have done anything of similar sound, but I still love an play a lot of the Armada labels. My favourites are definitely the Dj Remy and Roland stuff. They rock!

    4. What can we expect from You in the next couple of weeks ?

Steve May: Well I just quit my day job today as I want to spend more time writing tunes and doing remixes. So I'll be just playing a few gigs here and there, interview supporting Tenishia etc. As well as crankin out someremixes. I have just been asked to do a remix for Matt Darey and Lukey Chable and I will probably try and finish a few tracks too once he is back from canada/us.

    5. Godskitchen hits Melbourne on Saturday October the 6th, including big names such as Rank1, M.I.K.E. aka Push, The Thrillseeksers, Richard Durant and some more others, including local supports. How is to be on the same list with so many big names like the ones wroted above ?

Steve May: Its always a good feeling seeing your name on the posters with all the big names. I have worked pretty hard to get noticed as not just a producer from Melbourne, so yeah its always exciting to get booked for the big events.

    6. Where did the idea for "Change here for Epping" come from ?

Steve May: My mate Scott lives near a train station that all the trains split off either to Hurstbridge line or Epping line. Epping has a bit of a reputation as being 'fully sik' so we just called it that as a joke. Plus we were working at Scott's place so it just seemed ideal.

    7. You have accomplished a lot in a short period of time I reckon. What is the most important lesson You have learned about the EDM scene worldwide, specially the one in Melbourne, Australia ?

Steve May: I dont know any specific lessons learned but probably not to rush on getting records signed and out there. From a production point, there aren't all that many labels based in Australia, but there are a lot of producers to feed and learn from.

    8. What are three characteristics that set You apart from most of artists in the EDM industry ?

Steve May: I try not to stick to one genre I play what I think is the maddest stuff in my cd wallet at the time (from all corners of the genre scope) I try and keep my sounds tough.

    9. When would You say that You started Your EDM career and also what made You to become what You are nowadays ?

Steve May: Probably back in about 2002ish I started playing around with my computer to write tunes. I signed my first record in 2003. I like to think I have just been doing the same thing from the start, writing tunes based on sounds I like hearing and the direction I go as a Dj.

    10. What makes You stand out from other EDM Djs, producers and remixers out there ?

Steve May: I like to keep my sets diverse, driving, and progressing so people dont want to leave the dance floor (cept to go buy me beer)

    11. Have You got any plans outside of EDM ? How important do You think it is to branch out considering the lack of money being made in the EDM industry these days ?

Steve May: I have a day job to get me by. Writing records and djing is just a hobby that maybe one day I can do more and more

    12. Appreciate the interview anything to say to the readers of TranceSound, or.. anything else You would like to tell the public or the ones reading this interview ?

Steve May: Thanks for getting in touch!
