| Interview with Jes Brieden ( 11.08.2007 - 16:20 GMT UTC )
Jes the beautiful vocalist of 'Motorcycle - As the Rush Comes' which is a collaboration with Gabriel & Dresden, and the voice of 'Dj Tiesto - Everything' and also 'Solarstone - Like A Waterfall' which was featured on the 'In Search of Sunrise' series that Dj Tiesto produces, has released her own artist album 'Disconnect' on the well known label Black Hole in Europe and is now being released on Ultra Records in the United States of America and Canada. We were able to sit down with Jes Brieden prior to her appearance with Dj Tiesto's Element of Life Concert tour in 2007.
1. What is it like trying to become “Jes the artist” as opposed to the voice of “As the Rush Comes” ?
Jes Brieden: Oh, I don’t mind being known for that song, it was a huge success and it’s still a wonderful feeling for me to sing that song.
2. Your label and PR people have called your sound Rocktronica, explain that please.
Jes Brieden: Well rocktronica is where we are heading, the instruments, the guitars, the remixing of bands like Coldplay and The Killers, so it’s a natural progression. I came from the rock world and am used to working with live instruments, Disconnect is rocktronica, a little of both.
3. You have also been billed as “the Voice of Tiesto” ?
Jes Brieden: It’s an honor to work with him and be called that. This tour has been so incredible and working with him on “Everything” was amazing. My songs have been played by him a lot and it’s been something special to do music together
4. What do you think of online message boards and forums ?
Jes Brieden: If I Google myself I just freak out, a lot of weird thing written about me, so I try not to look. I have to keep a blind eye towards it. I do read threads that my manager sends me, but I don’t stay that active because a lot of the negativity out there.
5. The first time I met you was at Winter Music Conference in Miami, some say it is still very important, others don’t, how do you treat it ?
Jes Brieden: As a working vacation, I don’t stay out to long, but love meeting new people, watching many of the artists and making arrangements for future projects.
6. What are you looking for when deciding to work with Djs and producers ?
Jes Brieden: I have to gravitate towards something, it’s all about the music, it does not have to be a big name, it just has to feel right.
7. What was the most important piece getting together of Disconnect ?
Jes Brieden: The hardest thing was to find the right people to work with, the right producers, but it worked out so well that we are already working on my next album with them. I helped to co-produce everything; it was great being involved in everything from the vocals to all the music. I really love a new song called “Secret” and have some remixes of “Heaven” off Disconnect, which is coming out soon. I did some work on this album on the keys, piano, and organized a lot of the sounds.
8. How do you feel about being considered part of EDM, rather than mainstream music ?
Jes Brieden: Disconnect has all types of different tracks to give you various sides of me and my music. I love being part of this scene, it has really embraced me, I love bonding with the different Djs and artists and of course the people who come to the shows. I embrace EDM and am proud to be part of it. EDM is becoming part of the mainstream: TV, cinema, commercials, its already surfacing everywhere, even if people don’t recognize it. I did the rock thing, where I did showcases and worked with bands, I prefer to be part of our scene, it’s where I feel I belong
9. What kind of music do you listen to, and if we could put a microphone in your shower what would we hear you singing ?
Jes Brieden: I travel so much that I really try to follow all the world’s music; Jordanian, Lebanese, Irish, where ever I am I try to see what music the people are passionate about and I give it a listen. I was able to catch a Rolling Stones concert when I was on tour in Europe, and I listen to regular radio music like Kanye West, Mary J. Blige, who I love. As far as the shower, it would have to be 'Rhianna - Umbrella' (she says laughing)
10. Jordan, that sounds exotic ?
Jes Brieden: I really loved it there; it was so biblical and incredible. I found the people and the way of life to be so spiritual.
