1. At what point in your life did you discover that you had a creative talent for music ?
Alex Bartlett: Maybe when I was 10 years old.
2. Do you remember when you first got in to trance music ? What age were you at the time ?
Alex Bartlett: It was at a club in Rimini beach, I was sixteen.
3. At what age did you produce your first track ?
Alex Bartlett: 17 years of age.
4, Since your real name is Fabio Carrara, where did the name Alex Bartlett originate from and why did you decide to use this as your artist name ?
Alex Bartlett: This issue was so curious. I was in the studio with a friend, we just finished Amnesia and there was no artist name. My friend said hey Fabio, why don’t you create an alias ? Something like Cloud Bartlett. I don't know from where he was inspired so I said Claud ? Maybe Alex Bartlett cause Alex is my middle name :-)
5. Who were some of your musical influences ?
Alex Bartlett: I listen to all types of music. In particular I loved to listen to Enya, Sarah McLachlan, and Bjork in the past.
6. What can you tell us about the trance scene in Italy ?
Alex Bartlett: The trance scene in Italy is not the best, but we do have some great clubs and producers like Albert Vorne, Manuel Le Saux, and Mazza & Martinelli who are supporting this music on radio M2O. On 19th of May there was the Technology 01 (I am the creator of this event) it’s a big party with myself, Cosmic Gate, Rank 1, and Martin Roth in console there is a big response from the people. It was a successful night here in Italy, so now I am planning the Technology 02 for October (maybe).
7. How does your creative process work for producing tracks ?
Alex Bartlett: I don’t have a regular method of work.
8. What does your studio set up consist of ?
Alex Bartlett: Mac Pro Quad, Logic Pro 7, running many plug-ins and VST Instruments. Motu Audio interfaces, Access Virus Ti, Minimoog Little Phatty, Alesis Andromeda, Clavia Nord Lead 3, Waldorf q., Shermann Filterbank, Neumann microphones, and Preamp focusrie.
9. Can you tell us about any upcoming plans, albums, or events that you are involved with ?
Alex Bartlett: At the moment I am working on many projects like the new single by Andy Hawk called “Inspiration”, the follow up of “Touch the Sun” and “Heaven”, and new stuff by DJ Air.
10. What is the largest audience you have ever performed for and when was that ?
Alex Bartlett: It was here in Italy last year in the summer, around 4,000 people in a party called Dylan (well known here) @ Matrix Club generally @ Street Parade in Zurich (I was there from 1996 to 2002), around 700,000 people.
11. The track ”Amnesia” was apparently one of your biggest hits. Tell us some behind the scene information on what was going on in your life at the time that this track was released ?
Alex Bartlett: After the release of this single my life changed of course to many gigs, and lot of work in the studio because I am also a producer for Lyala, Dj Air, Alan Dexter and many others After “Amnesia” I had to do many remixes. Thanks to this single I’ve meet many many popular trance Djs and producers like Cosmic Gate, Martin Roth, Green Court, Talla2xlc, Duende, and many others and now we're good friends. As a DJ it’s all is changed, for better of course :-)
12. Would you like to make any comments regarding your latest releases 'Universe Inside' and 'Touch the Sun' ?
Alex Bartlett: Of course, 'Universe Inside is a "classic" hard trance vocal production (well known Alex Bartlett style), the natural follow up of Amnesia 2006. As about the 'Touch the Sun' is the beginning of my changes. After many years of vocal trance-hard trance now I’m putted in a different way, different vocal melodies, different harmonies and sounds for the future. I don't like use terms like progressive/trance or Tech-Trance because I am a trance lover. In this kind of music there's an evolution.
13. The track 'Touch the Sun' has been included in the 2007 edition of the compilation A State of Trance. What did you do differently this time around for this production ?
Alex Bartlett: As written, “Touch the Sun” is the first single representing my change, of course I have to say thanks a lot to my partners Anthya (the singer), Alessandro Talia, Alex PO' & Oscar Cossali.
4. What advice would you give to aspiring producers, especially on how to work with vocals ?
Alex Bartlett: Music can change your life, if you have no access points to this world, try and try again !!
