Interview with Fabio XB
As one of the leading electronic Italian producers, Alex Bartlett aka Fabio XB has been reaching international audiences since 1995. Recently dubbed as one of Armada Music’s Featured Artist, we take trip into the mastermind behind the decks. With so much to chew on, we are having this exclusive interview with Fabio in relation to his latest updates, further details about any forthcoming projects and why not, his personal point of view on today’s EDM (Electronic Dance Music) scene as a whole.
1. Two months ago you were dubbed as Armada Music’s “Featured Artist” of September. What were your reactions to this surprise and has this been a booster in your recent works?
Fabio XB: First of all, hi to everyone and thank you for the interview! Obviously it was an honor for me and I was really happy about it. As everybody knows Armada has a really good communication system, so yes, it was a “booster” that influenced my djing and discography career.
2. Can you please elaborate on the meaning of your main alias Fabio XB?
Fabio XB: Many people ask me about the XB, I don’t know why there is so much attention on these two letters. There is a really simple explanation for the enigma! X and B are the last and first letters that belong to the AleX Bartlett alias. I wanted to keep some of the past in my new artist name. The past is what makes us who we are today, so I thought it was great to keep a part of my old work in my name, for my new project.
3. You have currently teamed up with vocalist Simona Barbieri for “Flash of Life”, which has just been released on S107 Recordings. What are your feelings about the overall production? And the Cressidas’ remixes?
Fabio XB: This wasn’t the first time with Simona, it is great to have her beautiful voice for my music, I absolutely loved it! Feelings about the productions are really positive, it’s a good period for me, I feel inspired, which is an important component for an artist. Cressida did an awesome job with that remix! I think it can work well in the clubs and blow the roof off
4. Do you feel that the official music video for “Flash of Life” captures the track’s essential essence?
Fabio XB: I think that the video interprets exactly the feelings of what Simona and I came out with: a combination of music, sensations, and technology. The aim is to communicate to who is watching/listening something very deep and emotional, that can touch the soul through our senses. I reckon that Thomas Grossi, my film maker and tour manager, did a great job!
5. Armin recently showcased your latest work “Luminary” as Trance Gate on his podcast, A State of Trance. A highly uplifting track, which is also remixed by RAM. Was this intentional to contain an older trance vibe?
Fabio XB: Sure! Trance Gate is an important event for the Italian trance scene and I think that this track, both Luminary and Ascension bring back to our ears what people live during the event.
6. Please give us an introduction to the Trance Gate alias.
Fabio XP: As I said before, Trance Gate is an important Trance event based in Milan and has a 6 year history of many djs that went past this fabulous party concept. I’d like to thank the promoter Gianluca and the DJ of Trance Gate, my big friend Manuel Le Saux!
7. Would you care to describe a bit of the XB production process and equipment you find most helpful?
Fabio XB: I work with MacPro Logic 9 and interface with Ableton. I use a lot of Nord Lead 3 and Virus Ti plus many plug-ins. Artistically I don’t really have a method, I just write a lot of melodies with my collaborators and the main thing is: TO HAVE FUN!
8. Any future projects and/or festivals that you might be willing to share that you are looking forward to?
Fabio XB: Moozik, my latest release is out just now on Armada. It’s a collaboration with my friend Ronnie Paly. I’m working on three new singles, one as Fabio XB solo, another one will be a collaboration with Linnea Schossow, and the third track will be done with Mark Sixma. Recently I had some problems with my ears, fortunately everything is over now, but I had to stop for 4 months. I am back on the decks now, starting with EDEN in Rome, on the 27th of January with Marco V!
9. Thank you for taking the time to be apart of this interview. Is there anything that you might like to add for your readers here at TranceSound.net?
Fabio XB: Thanks again for this nice interview, I hope to see all the readers around the world some time soon!
