Kosheen Djs presents Clipper EP released on 1605 Recordings

Kosheen Djs presents Clipper EP released on 1605 RecordingsKosheen discography is a pure legacy who’s is set in stone for sure. A front runner of the electronic music movement – whose roots extend all the way back in late ’90s, when the Bristol-based trio was created, been a fixture in the region. Their music style fluctuate from Drum’n'Bass in their early stage to Trip Hop and Techno and Tech House nowadays. The band still consists of the old format such as producers Mark Davies aka Markee Substance and Darren Beale aka Darren Decoder with female singer and song writer Sian Evans. The band achieved lots of support and massive fame in the early 2000 with their unforgettable track “Hide U,” a pure statement that everyone that remembers Kosheen, it easily remembers “Hide U”.

Having already 4 albums under their belt, such as “Resist” (September 2001), “Kokopelli” (August 2003), “Damage” (March 2007) or else “Independence” (May 2010), Kosheen is yet another distinguished band that blends from their notorious Tribal sound-a-like to a more relaxed Tech House in 2011, trying to redefine their sound to a wider audience, changing their names to Kosheen Djs and of course stepping into a new realm of dub music.

On “Clipper,” Kosheen Djs continues to prove their relevance within the EMI (Electronic Music Industry) as a tombstone with brand new elements. Their biography is discussed almost as much as their music, and while their past gives their music a clear sense of validity, it doesn’t prevent it from being somehow their own signature. While Kosheen Djs clearly knows their lane, “Clipper” sounds like an upgraded “War of the Worlds,” having an undeniable sense of drama, something that is always running behind almost catching you, almost grabbing you in that state of mind that gives you a bit of shivering and goosebumps down your spine.

The initial mistake of the EP is Kosheen Djs’ failure to add vocals on “Clipper” or at least better introduction on “Over and Over,” being easily confused as a repetition of “Clipper,” better redefined with some extra elements and a building beat, having opportunity to set an unmistakable tone from the start. Equipped with another sick dub sample, on the second of track of the EP, Kosheen drops jewels that resonate with the listener well after the track ends, therefore both tracks are scattered projects, featuring some special elements brought from an apocalyptic movie soundtrack, so I reckon adding some vocals to both tracks would do just fine. It’s impossible not to compare the two and Kosheen Djs’ effort feels more like an out-take than an effort that should have made the whole EP. Ultimately “Clipper EP” ends up imitating its EP cover. It shows a tripod monster, something that can be easily related to an out of space animal or something, you name it. This is the 1605 label’s twisted image of a darker age, the age of Dub Techno, more like a Minimal track, that I would love listening amongst friends rather than alone.

Overall, the EP shows a puzzle of the artist, and while it’s near completion, the whole EP it’s still short a few pieces.
