Greg Downey & Mansun - (I'm in a) Wide Open Space
Paul Draper the vocalist/rhythm guitarist and the company (Stove King the bassist, Dominic Chad the lead guitarist/backing vocalist and Andie Rathbone the drummer) forms Mansun based in Chester, England, makes some of the best verses and songs of their career, but is it lost in 2003 when they vanished, the band broke up, but they literally made history with some major albums such as “Attack of the Grey Lantern” in 1997 (the band were originally called ‘Grey Lantern’), “Six” in 1998, “Little Kix” in 2003.
Their own biography and discography it’s huge, fair enough, but this time we are focusing on the 1997′s album “Attack of the Grey Lantern”, where we are having something special already, history in the making with their track “Wide Open Space” that literally took the world by storm at that time, being majorly supported on several top radio stations and huge support from Mr Paul Oakenfold himself a.k.a. Perfecto, being hammered in so many clubs around the world, including the well known British super nightclub Cream.
As far as we all know “Wide Open Space” was not Mansun’s most successful song when it comes to sales or British chart position, it only reached #15 in the UK Singles Chart, but it definitely propelled the band’s career and is their most well known song. This is the time when Paul Draper (the main leader) took full credit by saying that he is the one working on the whole melodic line 6 months prior finishing its lyrics and also the official release, reclaiming old mastery, but not without a few snags along the way, because Greg Downey introduced himself, making a perfect EDM anthem for 2010′s version.
You might not be aware of, but Greg started something on his own in the first place, making a very nice remix of “Wide Open Space”. By no means, the original it’s awesome, take my word for it, but the level of brilliance achieved by Greg it’s significantly hard to accomplish when it comes to such a quality track as this, therefore few months later Paul Draper contacted Greg to say that he would love the idea working along London based Producer, Dj and Remixer since he loves his remix. So this is perhaps the most endearing aspect of Greg’s artistry, his hunger for perfection, something that Paul likes the most, making things more clearly that he is on top of things, allowing the more Greg’s personal content to properly shine in terms of unique style. It’s in these right moments that it becomes clear Greg isn’t just the remixer, but the producer along Paul Draper.
Greg melds his detailed observations with his more Progressive-Techno tendencies, perfectly exemplifying his capabilities as a well known Producer to show great punch-lines but also adhere to a concept that not only he is aware of, but Paul also joins in. Although Greg is a Picasso when it comes to new age EDM, he has a real talent for vividly illustrating the track’s new perspective, high above the sky, something off the hook, as I love calling it, a track that is taking the world by storm again, so if 1997 was the year for the original, nowadays in 2010 is for Greg Downey to take the legacy beyond all expectations.
